About Us

Stroma Wildlife Cruises Ltd is very much a family business.

The company was registered in October 2025, and is an off-shoot of the family business which has owned the Island of Stroma since the 13th December 1960.

William Simpson

Head of the firm is William Simpson, whose father James Simpson bought the island of Stroma in 1960.

At the time, families were still living on the island, and they departed in 1962 or 1963, after which the island became abandoned.

The family, which also owns farmland on the mainland near John O’ Groats, has farmed Stroma ever since; and it is still a fully operational sheep farm to this day.

William grew up on the family farm near John O’ Groats and from infancy was a frequent visitor to the island to help with the work on the island.

After his father’s death, William carried on the business as head of the firm, helped by his two sons Liam and Jamie.”

Liam Simpson

Alongside his role in the family business, Liam is a pipe fitter whose career has taken him to locations all over the world.

Despite working internationally, his roots remain firmly in Caithness, and he built his family home on the farm near John O’ Groats, with sweeping views across the Pentland Firth to Stroma.

Liam continues to play an active part in the running of the island, returning regularly to support the agricultural work and maintain the strong family tradition that has defined Stroma for generations.

Jamie Simpson

Jamie has dedicated his working life to the family business and knows the waters of the Inner Firth with an almost instinctive familiarity.

His years of travelling back and forth to Stroma have given him a deep understanding of the island, its coastline, and its seasonal rhythms.

In addition to helping run the farm, Jamie operates a fleet of creels in the surrounding waters, fishing for crab and lobster in the tidal channels around the island.

His knowledge of the sea and Stroma’s unique environment plays a key role in the ongoing management and day-to-day life of the island.
